Relegation in the spotlight in Tuesday's Liga matches

MADRID, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Although most attention this week will be focused on when FC Barcelona confirm this season's La Liga title, a lot is going on elsewhere in this midweek round of matches, which will be vital to help decide who stays up, who goes down and which sides qualify for Europe.

Two of Tuesday's three matches are especially relevant to the battle against relegation, which tightened over the weekend.

Sevilla's game at home to Las Palmas promises to be packed with tension after Sevilla lost to 10-man Celta Vigo on Saturday, prompting violent protests from the club's supporters, forcing the players to spend the night inside its training ground.

Striker Isaac Romero is suspended for Sevilla, while Ruben Vargas and Akor Adams are out for the season, with coach Joaquin Caparros likely to draft in young Colombian Mateo Mejia.

A win against a direct rival would probably ensure Sevilla's survival, but with Real Madrid and Villarreal to come afterwards, defeat could be fatal.

Girona coach Michel Sanchez was forced to watch his side's late defeat to Villarreal from hospital and the coach will also miss the visit to bottom side Real Valladolid.

A win for Girona would put survival within touching distance, but a defeat to a side long since relegated would also keep Girona in the relegation mix.

Marcos Alonso is suspended as Celta Vigo travels to play a Real Sociedad side in need of improvement after a first-half capitulation to Atletico Madrid at the weekend.

Celta's win over Sevilla keeps the northwestern outfit up in seventh place and looking good to play in Europe next season.

Real Madrid faces Mallorca on Wednesday, while Barcelona plays Espanyol on Thursday in two matches that could mathematically decide this season's La Liga title.
